Comparing Exterior Painting Estimates: How Do You Pick?

Okay, so you’ve done your due diligence and collected a few house painting quotes, knowing that THIS is going to be the year that you get your curb appeal back. The only problem is, all the quotes look pretty similar, and you aren’t really sure how to choose one. One has to be the best, right?

Here are a few practical tips to keep in mind.

#1: Don’t Focus Just On Price

The price of your paint job doesn’t guarantee the quality of your experience.

Some folks assume that expensive is better, while others assume cheaper is better. There are so many variables at play, making this a really risky approach. In other words, don’t throw the most (or least) expensive options off the table. You have to dig deeper than price, considering the overall value of the work being done and your experience during the process.

#2: What’s Included in Your Painting Warranty?

The warranty (or guarantee) can be a real eye-opener.

If it’s short, it doesn’t inspire much confidence, right? And if it’s long, it may be an indicator that your painter is more interested in closing the deal than they are in really standing by their work. Long warranties can be riddled with loopholes and fine print.

Our best advice? Look for a clear, reasonable warranty that spells out exactly what’s covered and what isn’t. Simple is good.

#3: Make Sure You Know What Painting Preparation Is Included

Let’s start by saying that a detailed, crystal clear estimate is essential. And part of that estimate should spell out exactly what’s included as far as surface preparation. Sometimes the bid will ONLY include the cost of paint and labor, but detailed prep and necessary repairs will be added on. You don’t want curveballs like that in the middle of a project.

#4: What Kind of Products (and How Many Coats) Are Included?

Sometimes the bottom line cost can be driven down by using cheaper paint products, and you may be none the wiser (until your paint starts failing after a couple of years). Make sure your estimate communicates the type of paint that will be used, and how many coats.

#5: Check the Credentials

Time to look past the paperwork. Do some digging online, checking your prospective painters’ websites, reviews, and local reputation. Even if the cost is a little higher up front, it’s crucial to hire an established, reputable painting contractor that is invested in your satisfaction and their own reputation.

#6: Put a High Value On Your Experience

What kind of house painting experience can you expect from your painters? Do they tell you? For example:

  • Will your landscaping be trampled, or covered and protected?
  • Will your yard be sprinkled with paint chips, or did your painter share their containment and cleanup procedure?
  • Will you be dealing with loud music and workers, or an organized, respectful, communicative team?

So, what’s your takeaway?

Don’t just focus on price, as important as that can be. You deserve a fantastic painting experience, and long-term value. The best way to guarantee both is to ask tough questions, know what to look for on the estimate, and know how to evaluate your bids on a deeper level. It’s worth the extra effort!
